 Summer Reading

It’s not too early to start thinking about summer – reading that is.  With the end of school right around the corner, remember that without use, all our skills diminish over time.  Not only physical skills can be lost, but mental skills as well.  That’s why reading is such a critical activity.  Not only that, reading is versatile.  Too hot outside for you?  The public library is air conditioned.  Can’t go anywhere on vacation?  Reading takes you places you never imagined. Once again this year we will make available a pre-order form for you to purchase a book or two.  Barnes & Noble will deliver them to the school, and we’ll deliver them to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Click each grade below for the Grade-Specific Summer Reading Pre-Order form.

Collins Hill High School has also provided us with the high-school reading list, as well. Click on the "9" to view the CHHS summer reading list.

Grading Rules

In order to foster common grading expectations at Creekland, all teachers have been given a grade book template to use.  The template contains grading rules and grading weights that are common for the entire school.

Grading rules define how numerical grades will be allocated to the letter grades A, B, C, D, and U.  Grading rules are consistent throughout Gwinnett County as part of GCPS policies and procedures.

Grading Weights define what percentage each category such as tests, classwork, and projects will count towards the total grade.  These weights are consistent through all academic content areas at Creekland with the only exceptions being those Connections classes that rely heavily on performance assessments.

               Grading Rules                                   Grading Weights

            90 – 100          A                                  Tests                35%

            80 – 89                        B                                  Quizzes           20%

            74 – 79                        C                                  Projects/Labs   20%

            70 – 73                        D                                  Classwork        15%

              0 – 69                        U                                  Homework       5%

                                                                         Benchmark       5%

Classwork vs. Homework

In order to bring appropriate uniformity to the question regarding the differences in student work and the category in which that work is placed for the purpose of grading, the following explanation is provided.

Simply stated...if the work is done at home it is homework...it is not classwork that was completed at home.

If classwork is sent home for completion, the portion completed at home becomes homework and should be reflected in the grade book as such.

If a project is sent home for completion, the portion completed at home becomes homework and should be reflected in the grade book as such.

Academic Recovery Plan

Creekland has an Academic Recovery Plan that allows students to retake a test if they are not satisfied with the grade they earned. This form includes a plan for remediation that the student must complete before a retest is allowed. Students may obtain this form from his teacher so that they can schedule a time for the retest.

Go2 Portal Goes Live

The Go2 Parent Portal went “live” for the Collins Hill Cluster on February 9th. Parents who completed a registration form should have received their secure login ID and password information via an email from the district. The parent portal will allow parents to monitor their child’s academic performance and attendance at any time. Parents also have access to testing and discipline information. As a result of this new communication tool, our teachers will only send emailed progress reports for the remainder of the third nine weeks. At the beginning of the fourth nine weeks, we will no longer send emailed progress reports. Parents will be expected to use the Go2 Parent Portal to stay abreast of their child’s progress in each class.

If you have not yet signed up for the Go2 Parent Portal, we encourage you to stop by the school and register as soon as possible. Please remember, for student confidentiality, all registration forms must be submitted in person so that picture identification can be verified.

March 12, 2010 will be the final date for progress reports to be emailed. After March 12, grade reports should be accessed through the parent portal.

Make Money for Our School, the Easy Way

We know how important our school is to you. Now it’s easier than ever to make a positive impact on it. Georgia Natural Gas® (GNG) has launched the TrueBlue Schools™ Program. It’s a simple fundraising solution that lets parents, teachers, alumni and members of our local community support our school – just by choosing GNG! GNG’s goal is to raise $2,000,000 over the next two years for Georgia schools. Together we can make it happen.

Here’s how it Works

GNG will provide ongoing donations to our school for every GNG customer who signs up for the program and designates our school as the school they wish to support. For every customer that signs up, GNG will –

• Give our school a one-time $25 donation per customer

• Donate $5 for each month you are a GNG customer – up to $60 per year

• As an added bonus, give each new GNG customer a $25 Visa® Gift Card

It’s just that simple! Anyone can participate, and the more people who sign up and select our school, the more money we receive. It’s easy and effective, and it feels good! We all want to see our kids succeed. Let’s make it happen together.
